Using Aela as a follower may stop her from giving this quest. This may be because the quest auto-assigns her to be a "temporary follower" and it gets confused you'll notice you can't trade equipment with her during this time. Dismissing her as a follower, leaving the area, then waiting for three in-game days may be enough to clear up this problem.
Don't ask her to follow you until you've acquired all the totems. If married to Aela, while traveling to Harmugstahl to get the werewolf totem, she may disappear and you will not be able to complete this quest. It is possible to fix this bug by waiting in Dragonsreach for 24 hours, but it does not always work. I found that if you cure yourself after curing kodlak you won't get the personal quest from Farkus, Vilkis or Aela. I waited until I finished their quests b4 curing myself. User Info: winterwolf1. Speak to Aela and she will randomly need your help in recovering one of the 3 totems. Once you have 1 or all 3 totems placed in the Underforge, you can pray to any 1 of them and receive their corresponding blessing that will change how your Werewolf howl affects enemies. The Dawnguard add-on expands upon these abilities even further.
The Totem of Brotherhood allows you to summon ghostly wolves, add-on changes them to ice wolves and then 2 red ethereal werewolves.
